Biography

Kannappan Palaniappan is an associate professor in the Computer Science Department at the University of Missouri—Columbia, where he co-founded the Multimedia Communications and Visualization Laboratory. A former senior research scientist at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Palaniappan has received such prestigious awards as the NASA Public Service Medal for pioneering contributions to scientific visualization, the Boeing Welliver Summer Faculty Fellowship and the notable William T. Kemper Fellowship for Teaching Excellence. At NASA he cofounded the Visualization and Analysis Laboratory that has produced a number of spectacular Digital Earth visualizations used by museums, magazines and broadcast television. He is co-inventor of the Interactive Image SpreadSheet for handling large multispectral imagery and developed the first massively parallel semi-fluid motion analysis algorithm for tracking winds in turbulent hurricane cloud structures using rapid scan geostationary operating environmental satellite (GOES) data. His research is funded by the National Institutes of Health, NASA, the National Science Foundation, the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, Raytheon and Silicon Graphics Inc.
